Celebrating women’s empowerment

The empowerment of people, particularly women, is embedded in Oikocredit’s work, with over 80% of our partners’ end-clients being women. Oikocredit itself also leads by example when it comes to the empowerment of women.

In this edition you’ll find an interview with two of Oikocredit’s female directors about what it’s like being a woman in management. You’ll also find the latest facts and figures, a short video of a microfinance partner in India, an interview with the CEO of Oikocredit microfinance partner, Finance Trust Bank, as well as a partner story from the Dominican Republic.

Advancing gender balance

According to a recent study published by the Grant Thornton International Business Report, the proportion of women in senior roles worldwide has stagnated at 24%. At Oikocredit, the division of staff by gender has been equal for many years, with the management team achieving a full gender balance in 2013. In acknowledgement of this achievement, we spoke with two of our management team members, Irene van Oostwaard, finance director and Ylse van der Schoot, investor relations director.

A woman in a man's world

Like many Latin American countries, the Dominican Republic has a strong, male-oriented culture. One woman who has stepped out of the traditional gender role is Nancy Espinal, who, with her sister, established a transportation company in their local city of Maimón.

Banking on a better future

Finance Trust Bank is a Ugandan microfinance bank founded in 1984 by a women’s group who realised that women were more economically disadvantaged because of their lack of access to financial services. Today, the bank has over 200,000 clients, majority of whom are female.
