Funding to support handmade woollen garments

Uruguay

Fair trade

Trade in products that have been certified and carry a fair trade label. An example of this is a farmer’s cooperative that collectively sells its cocoa to a fair trade organization.

Green

Promotes and/or supports the protection of the environment. An example of this is an organic farming cooperative.

Manos del Uruguay is a non-profit fair trade organization established in 1968. Its mission is to create economic, social and cultural opportunities and generate employment for women in rural areas, allowing them to remain in their home towns, earn a living and develop themselves. Manos del Uruguay women dye wool, and design and knit garments - both for the local market and well-known international fashion brands.

Manos del Uruguay is made up of 13 cooperatives that bring together 250 craftswomen throughout the country. Its service centre in Montevideo provides the cooperatives with product designs, raw materials, technical training, equipment, machinery maintenance, marketing, financing and business advice. In addition to earning an income, the women of Manos benefit from access to social security and the flexible conditions offered by the NGO.

Oikocredit supports Manos as the organization manages to combine a strong social outlook and focus on traditional local crafts with an international market perspective. It shares many of Oikocredit’s objectives in the field of women’s empowerment, the environment and rural entrepreneurship.

Manos del Uruguay has been an Oikocredit partner since 2009, not long before it was certified as a Fair Trade organization by the WFTO.
